How long have you worked at Empower?

I started working for Empower on May 1st 2023

Relocating is a big step – why Australia and why Empower?

I always knew I wanted to move away from England, and why not move to a sunny country full of new adventures and opportunities! I landed in Australia November 2022, although I moved by myself, I was fortunate enough to have a sibling who has resided in Perth for approximately 5 years, so it was comforting to have a familiar face when I first arrived to help me get settled.

Qualifying as an Occupational Therapist (OT) in a different country I knew I would I need a supportive workplace that would allow me to learn and adapt to differences in Australian healthcare. One of the requirements of my limited registration to work as an occupational therapist in Australia was that I would need a supervisor to mentor me for 6 months which Empower was incredibly efficient and supportive with organising this.

What makes Empower the right place for you?

Empower’s core values align with my own professional and personal ethics. I wanted to make a difference wherever I worked and being part of the Empower team has allowed me to do that while living the lifestyle I had dreamed of when we decided to move to Australia.

How has Empower assisted your professional/career development?

Empower has assured me that I would have an excellent standard of training and would enable me to progress as a clinician and develop my skills over time. They understood I had trained in the UK and was still adapting to the differences in the way clinicians work here in Australia and have delivered on their ongoing help and support.

What do you love most about working at Empower?

Empower have been supportive and patient with me developing my skills and competencies since I began working for them.  Although I have only been an employee of Empower for a short time I am very much looking forward to my future with the company! I have great colleagues, who have also been supportive. I have also done some multi-disciplinary shadowing to learn about the other Empower services that I will be working alongside.

What would you say to someone thinking about relocating to Australia with Empower?

It is challenging at times but everything worth doing is challenging. One day, on your break between clients you will find yourself on a bench in the sunshine, sipping a flat white, overlooking the ocean, and you will realise how lucky you are to be here. The challenge is worthwhile.

Briony, Physiotherapist. Originally from South Africa.

How long have you worked at Empower?

I started working for Empower in June 2018, so that’s 5 years.

Relocating is a big step – why Australia and why Empower?

My young family and I were looking to move to a country that would allow us to live the outdoor lifestyle we love while providing us all with the opportunities we wanted in our careers and education.

I’m not sure if I found Empower or Empower found me?

I think we found each other. I needed a supportive workplace that would allow me to balance my family’s needs with my career. I was immediately paired with a mentor who helped me negotiate registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) and the unfamiliar aspects of the Australian healthcare system.

What makes Empower the right place for you?

Empower’s core values align with my own professional and personal ethics,

I wanted to make a difference wherever I worked and being part of the Empower team has allowed me to do that while living the lifestyle I had dreamed of when we decided to move to Australia.

How has Empower assisted your professional/career development?

Wow, in so many ways. Firstly, in attaining full registration in Australia, Empower assisted with funding and with the time off I needed. I have worked in community and residential settings at Empower, had the opportunity to move into leadership and mentorship roles and deliver webinars for our clients. I have also been supported in return to work after maternity leave with work flexibility and very supportive colleagues, HR and management.

What do you love most about working at Empower?

Everything at Empower has been developed to deliver the best possible healthcare for our patients, that attracts a certain kind of person to work here, so I have great colleagues. No matter what we face, the solution always comes down to what is best for the people we care for. That’s a very clarifying way to approach work. What’s best for our patients is to have healthy, happy, well-trained clinicians helping them reach their goals.

That means good wages, supportive work environments, work arrangements that suit our lifestyles and easily accessible PD.

What would you say to someone thinking about relocating to Australia with Empower?

I’ve never met anyone who has regretted it. It is challenging at times but everything worth doing is challenging. One day you will find yourself sipping a flat white, sitting on a bench in the sunshine overlooking the ocean, on your break between patients and you will realise how lucky you are to be here.

Eloise, Relationship Manager/ Business Development Manager. Originally from Southampton England.

How long have you worked at Empower?
I started working for Empower in Aug 2020, nearly 3 years ago.

Relocating is a big step – why Australia and why Empower?
I originally planned to come to Australia for a year and came on a working holiday Visa, I have loved it so much I have been here 6 years and am underway applying for permanent residency.

At the time in England  my husband and I had good jobs but we weren’t totally happy thinking there has to be more to life than getting a mortgage in the town we grew up in. So I convinced my husband to come to Australia for a year. Needless to say he now loves it too and both of us have progressed in both our careers and life.

We have been on so many Oz adventures, Aussies joke I’ve seen more of it than they have. I love my job but I also love being able to experience new things and I have the best work/ life balance I have ever had.

Not to mention the wages in Aus generally for all occupations are better, even with the cost of living most people are better off financially in Australia.

Australia has miles better weather than the UK (think the longest summers of your life.)

Melbourne still gets the different seasons so you don’t have to miss out on Autumn leaves and some rain but much much less!

Everyone seems happier in the sun and Melbourne is a buzzing beautiful city, with so many breathtaking places to visit in Victoria. Australia offers a really outdoorsy lifestyle, I live a 10 minute walk from the beach and there are lots of free things to do for families including free BBQs everywhere in beautiful parks. I will also never get over how incredible the wildlife is – think colourful exotic birds flying round your house as if they were just pigeons! Or kangaroos bouncing around on your weekend trip to the country.

Empower found me, much like it seems they have found you!  They were and are so supportive and despite having to wait for me, said they found the right person and were determined to wait for me to start with them. Not only that Empower have also been helping me with my permanent residency application – I don’t feel like just a number, you will be well supported at Empower.

What makes Empower the right place for you?
I wanted to work for a company I could get behind and be passionate about growing, I genuinely believe and know we change lives.

We have so many amazing clinicians that transform people’s quality of lives in the community.

Everyone in the team genuinely wants the best for clients and each other. Who wouldn’t want to work for a company making such a positive impact?

How has Empower assisted your professional/career development?
Empower took a chance on me with a wealth of Healthcare experience but no Aged care experience, I now head up both our Residential aged care Clients and our Home Care clients looking after aged care facility owners, facility managers and case managers. Empower taught me everything I know about this industry and always encourage learning through industry webinars and publications.

What do you love most about working at Empower?
I love that I am trusted and that when I suggest improvements they are actually listened too. We have a great process improvement team and so many great initiatives have been launched off the back of feedback I have personally given. I’ve worked for large corporates in the past and sometimes I would find suggestions for improvements could get lost up the corporate ladder, in a head office in a different country. People are Empowers greatest assets they know that and genuinely want to hear your ideas about how we can strive for better always.

My colleagues are amazing, and we really do have a “shared purpose” to make people’s lives better.

What would you say to someone thinking about relocating to Australia with Empower?
If before I lived here, Australia came knocking on my door when I was in the UK I would have jumped at the chance. I have made so many friends here who originated from all over the world. Both myself and my husband have grown as people, been on more adventures than we could ever have imagined and have family lined up to want to come out and visit us.

Everyone should try living in a different country at least once, Australia is a home from home from the UK and I am so excited for you! If you want someone to have your back with relocation/ settling in Empower is a brilliant company to do that with.

Tammy

Tammy In Profile

In Profile with Tammy, Operations Manager: NSW & QLD

Tammy joined Empower in 2017, tasked with establishing the Home Care and Community Healthcare service. At the time the company existed only in metropolitan Melbourne and employed only three Home Care clinicians. Over the next four years Tammy spearheaded a thriving Home Care and NDIS service, established systems and supported the roll out of new service offerings in multiple States.

Empower Healthcare now has branches in Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, employing 130 clinicians Nationally. Through this exciting and challenging time, Tammy has been building multiple services from the ground up.

She now brings this extensive experience and all the supports and systems of an established healthcare provider to QLD and NSW.

Why did you choose this role?

I always wanted to be the person to take Empower to QLD. In 2021, the Victorian service was well established with around 170 partners and I was ready to recreate the successes of our services in a new region.

Having built thriving Home Care services in Victoria and supported the same in WA & NSW, I knew I had the experience and knowledge to create a service that meets the need of clients in different States.

What personality trait makes you well suited to your work?

I’m patient and resilient. I love solving problems in innovative ways and I tend to take challenges and successes in my stride.

What sets Empower QLD apart?

In a word, communication. We prioritise relationship building- within our team and with care providers, case managers and clients. The result is better service provision and outcomes for clients.

What can care providers expect when they work with you?

Firstly, agility in meeting their client’s needs with quick turnaround times for referrals, assessments and treatments. In line with our Corporate values, I also insist on honesty and integrity throughout our services and in every aspect of our work. More than that, however, is that we place relationships and trust at the core of everything we do.

What motivates you in your work?

I have a passion for this company and I’ve seen the difference we make in the lives of the people we work with. The more people we reach, the greater the impact we can have for clients needing our services.

Is there a quote that motivates you?

About Empower Healthcare

We Change Lives

Empower Healthcare was founded in 2016 by two people who were determined to improve the standards of allied health services in residential aged care. With industry knowledge and an innovative approach, Adam and Matthew set about defining what allied health services can be when quality and person-centred care is placed before all else in healthcare.

The partnership, that merged clinical expertise with business acumen, soon established Empower Healthcare as a leading provider of quality physiotherapy services in residential aged care facilities in Victoria. This success fueled the expansion of our services within residential aged care, home care and NDIS to deliver occupational therapy, physiotherapy, nursing, podiatry, dietetics, osteopathy, massage and speech pathology.

Now offering comprehensive allied health services with more than 180 dedicated and passionate clinicians working in Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. Empower Healthcare is growing and taking our unique approach with us.

A lot has changed over the years but not our commitment to the highest quality care, delivered by expert clinicians, aimed at improving the independence and quality of life of our clients. Helping our clients live their lives the way they want to.

Grad Advice – Interview Process and Tips

2021 Graduate Program Banner 4 blog

and hopefully welcome you to the Empower family.

Congratulations your application has been received! But what comes next during the Empower interview process?

First Stage

A phone screen will be conducted by our People and Culture team, so be prepared for questions such as;

– What do you know about Empower Healthcare?
– What interested you in applying for Empower Healthcare?
– Areas of particular interest in your field
– Career goals and plans
– Availability and salary expectation

Second Stage

The second stage interview will be with the hiring manager either face-to-face or online via MS TEAMS. Along with excessive baking and overhauls of fitness gear, online interviews have become the latest trend.  Just like any other job interview, the etiquette remains the same.

Our online interview tips are:

– If you can’t make an interview, always call through and let someone know so we can reschedule
– Log on a few minutes earlier to test your connection, audio, and visuals
– There are options on MS Teams to change your background if you don’t want the interviewer to see what’s behind you
– Set yourself up in a quiet room with no distractions
– Dress to impress – top half at least

This second stage is more about your working style and for both yourself and the hiring manager to get to know one another. The questions will be around your previous experiences and how you react in different circumstances, such as;

– How you deal with difficult situations/people?
– Organisational and planning skills and types of techniques you use?
– High pressured situations examples and how you deal with them
– What are your career goals and interest areas?

You will be provided with a detailed overview of the Empower Graduate Program and timings. It is just as important for you to ask questions so you can learn more about the company and if it is the right fit for you.

Tips for graduates

– Come prepared with questions that are important to you
– Set out your own expectations for your graduate year
– Honesty is the best policy – if you have other job offers, do let us know and also be transparent with the other companies
– The hiring manager would usually be the person who will be your mentor or manager, if not, it’s ok to ask to meet some of the members of the team

At Empower Healthcare we believe that our strength lies in our people, so be your open and honest self during the interview process, as we will be with you and hopefully welcome you to the Empower family.

New leadership Occupational Therapy appointments bring a wealth of expertise

NDIS OT Image

Empower Announces Two Leadership Occupational Therapy Appointments

Empower Healthcare has responded to the exponential growth in demand for quality Home Care and NDIS OT services by appointing two exceptional Occupational Therapists to leadership roles.

Alison Enticott has been appointed OT Manager, while Monica Leo comes on board as OT Quality and Development Lead. Alison and Monica will head up the OT team, ensuring that Empower leads the way in delivering high quality, person-centred occupational therapy services that expand with the changing care needs of the clients and communities we work in.

CEO Adam Gilroy-Smith welcomes them both to the Empower team

We are excited to have two amazing talents of the quality of Alison and Monica join us in these incredibly important roles. Alison and Monica are the best in the business, with an abundance of experience leading occupational therapy transformation and engagements at scale and galvanising cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional results. That combination makes them the ideal fit to drive our client partnerships as we grow our business across Australia.

In leading the national OT team, Alison brings together skills in people leadership, stakeholder management, strategic planning and mentoring skills to support each individual to reach their full potential. Alison draws on her broad range of experience having worked in inpatient rehabilitation and then private and public hand therapy practice early in her career. She subsequently worked in the areas of occupational rehabilitation, corporate health, health insurance, and life insurance within a range of management and consulting roles. Most recently Alison has led teams in community settings supporting people with disabilities through the NDIS to achieve their goals.

Monica will lead the personal and professional development of the team, communicating Empower Healthcare’s vision for continued high quality healthcare, developing complex strategies to build relationships with key stakeholders and delivering a clinical excellence framework that continuously improves the skills and confidence in improving outcomes of care and consumer experiences. Monica joins with a strong pedigree working in some of Australia’s most recognisable brands, including Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash University. Her experience gained from transdisciplinary, family-centred practice with paediatric private practice modelling and NDIS Group programs, will see Monica add her expertise to shaping the future of allied health support in Aged Care and NDIS.

Alison and Monica’s healthcare ethos aligns well with Empower, as Monica reveals
The thing I love about Occupational Therapy is that we focus on what matters to a person, not what is the matter with them. When people can do the things that are meaningful to them, it has so many positive benefits to their health and wellbeing. Occupational Therapy is all about celebrating the individual. It’s about focusing on what people can do and helping them navigate any barriers to them doing what they want to do and enjoy doing.
The senior appointments continue Empower Healthcare’s strong business growth and momentum in 2021 to now provide allied health support across the East Coast of Australia and in the west.
