Why the Otago Exercise Programme may be right for your client

OT Promoting Independence 4

Physiotherapists working in community settings can improve the independence, safety and quality of life of older people living at home by implementing evidence-based exercise programmes as part of comprehensive home care.

Why the Otago Exercise Programme?

  • Proven 35% reduction in falls and injuries resulting from falls.
  • It is equally effective in men and women.
  • The programme improves participants’ strength and balance.
  • Maintains confidence in carrying out everyday activities without falling.
  • The programme is cost effective and easy to implement at home.

Who benefits from the programme?

Older adults who:

  • Have a history of a fall.
  • Rely on walking for independence.
  • Fear falling and lack the confidence to enjoy activities inside and outside the home.
  • Have experienced a decrease in function following illness or injury.
  • Notice reduced strength and balance when performing activities of daily living.

By using this programme, physiotherapists can adapt exercises to meet the unique goals of individuals with complex medical needs at most stages of reablement and walking mobility while using a proven and effective approach to exercise therapy.

“I love using the Otago Exercise Programme with my clients. It’s effective and easy to adapt to the diverse environments I work in. My clients experience increased confidence that comes from improved balance and strength and allows them to participate in their community and remain independent for as long as possible.”

Briony Watt, Physiotherapist

In Profile with Cristina Speranza – Physiotherapist NSW

Stripo Michelle 1

We welcome Cristina Speranza to the Empower family. Cristina is our newest graduate physiotherapist in NSW.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi! My name is Cristina Speranza and I am a new graduate Physiotherapist that has recently joined the Empower NSW team. I completed a Bachelor of Human Science majoring in Human Movement at Macquarie University and a Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Technology Sydney. During my degree, I discovered that Physiotherapist’s can treat much more than your usual musculoskeletal injuries, in fact we can EMPOWER client’s to achieve their goals and improve their quality of life. I have discovered a deep passion for neurological rehabilitation and in the future I aspire to become a clinical educator and share my knowledge and passion for Physiotherapy with the future generations to come.

In your new position at Empower, what will you be looking to achieve in 2021?

Being the first Physiotherapist on the NSW team, I would love to share my current knowledge with future Empower Physiotherapist’s and contribute to expanding the team. I would also love to learn and expand my own Physiotherapy skill set to ensure I am delivering quality care to all clients.

What do you love most about your role?

I love when client’s feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness when they have achieved their goals. That is the reason why I wake up every morning and do what I do. I also love being able to connect with client’s and hear their stories and wisdom.

What has been your most memorable moment?

The most memorable moment of my Physiotherapy career was when I was managing a paraplegic client and she had been hospitalised for 5 months since her injury. She had not left the hospital in that time and her goal was to complete a car transfer to go for a drive to Coogee beach. The only thing that was stopping her, was her inability to complete a transfer out of her wheelchair. After a lot of motivation, intensive practice and strength training she was able to complete the car transfer and her husband drove her to Coogee beach. After the drive, she was crying of pure happiness and could not stop thanking me for never giving up on her. That was the moment when I realised no matter what condition the client has there is always an alternative solution for them to achieve their goals.

What attracted you to Empower?

Being a new graduate Physiotherapist, I initially found it quite overwhelming to start practicing with minimal to no supervision. Empower offered a great new graduate program that has a great balance of support and independence. Another aspect that attracted me to Empower was that it permits me to treat clients in their own homes. This enhances the specificity of treatment options and it makes the therapy more relatable and functional for each client.

What piece of advice would you give your new graduate self?

The best piece of advice I would give to myself and any new graduate was a mantra I was told by a UTS lecturer, and it is “Don’t overcomplicate it. Keep it simple stupid.” Also take any opportunity that comes your way because opportunities breed opportunities.

Out of the workplace, what are your interests and hobbies?

I love going to the gym and exercising. I enjoy a variety of training styles including strength training, cardiovascular training, Pilates and boxing. More importantly I love food and cooking, especially baking! Being Italian it’s in my genetics. I also love to travel (COVID has been a bit of a buzz kill with that) but I am definitely making the most of traveling around Australia.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

A fun fact is that I was a dancer for 15 years and I used to compete around NSW. I also used to play the piano at a very high level during school. I still know how to play “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys, “End of the Road” by Boys to Men, “Clocks” by Coldplay and a few others.

Jeremy Ong - Physiotherapy Home Care Team Leader WA

We welcome Jeremy Ong to the Empower family. Jeremy is our Physiotherapy Home Care Team Leader in WA and has joined the management team to lead the Physio Team in mobile physiotherapy services.

Tell us a bit about yourself

My passion in physiotherapy stems from seeing the gap between a patient in hospital and returning to normal life at home. I hope on working to help with that transition and with that in mind, have completed extra studies in Chronic pain, Vestibular disorders and Lifestyle Integrated Functional Exercises.

Graduating from Curtin in 2012, I spent my first four years as a Physiotherapist in Victoria working in Aged Care facilities and Rehabilitation Hospitals prior to moving back to Perth. Since returning, I’ve been employed in the community sector as a mobile physiotherapist.

What attracted you to Empower?

It wasn’t the purple uniforms! I felt that Empower Healthcare’s values aligned similarly with my own. Having heard of the proven systems and structures working in Victoria, it was great to see and have that same support implemented in WA. Finally, knowing that the company will only look to grow if they continue to keep their promises made this role very appealing.

In your new position at Empower, what will you be looking to achieve in 2020?

I’m hoping to make an impact and establish Empower Healthcare as the number one choice as allied health home care provider in WA.

What do you love most about your role?

I get great satisfaction in being a part of a client’s journey in working towards and achieving their goals. Even though I have taken on a Team Leader role, I still get to go on the road and treat clients right in the own homes, whether the goal is to walk normally after surgery or to be able to climb stairs for the first time in 10 years.

What has been your most memorable moment?

“Having seen a client for 8-9 months after experiencing set-back after set-back to taking their first unaided steps with her husband looking on with tears of joy.”

What piece of advice would you give your new graduate self?

“If you treat the DISEASE, you win, you lose. You treat the PERSON, I’ll guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the outcome” – Hunter Patch Adams

Out of the workplace, what are your interests and hobbies?

I am a father of one very active toddler. My main sport of choice is basketball but up for trying different activities. I also enjoy working in the garden, despite having artificial grass in my backyard.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

I prefer listening to Podcasts and talk-back radio rather than music while driving.

InProfile with Tim Cooper, Senior Physiotherapist

Website blog 1500 x 600 Tim Cooper

In Profile with Tim Cooper, Senior Physiotherapist

MVP winner Tim Cooper, Senior Physiotherapist shares his background and love for aged care physio. Regarded highly by his colleagues as “the loveliest physiotherapist” his kind, gentle and encouraging personality is admired by many of our clients.  With an affection for basketball, kayaking and the Foo Fighters, what’s not to love about Tim!

Why did you choose Empower?

I was moving on from 10 years in private practice and looking for employment that was flexible with my schedule of looking after kids, while decreasing some of the stress that a private clinic can bring.

I got an instantly warm vibe from both Matthew (COO) and Adam (CEO), who made the Empower team seem like a big family.  I haven’t felt so relaxed in an interview, which I knew was a sign that this was a place I wanted to be.

To top it off, being a tragic Michael Jordan fan growing up, I saw a framed Jordan poster in Matt’s office during my interview and knew I was making the right decision!

What do you love most about your job?

In aged care, you often see clients for longer periods than in a private practice setting. I believe this allows you to form strong bonds with the people you are treating. It’s a fulfilling sensation providing a service to someone who you get to know so well. I have one client who says I remind her of her son and loads me up with chocolate (not any old chocolate either – Ferrero Rocher!) before I leave each session. It doesn’t get much better than that.

What has been your most memorable moment?

Helping someone restore function that has been lost for so long is as satisfying to me as it is to the client. It may not seem like much, however I have a client who hadn’t been able to touch her head (making self care impossible) due to her shoulder pain over a number of years. After a progressive strengthening program she is now able to do all of her self-care independently, whilst also reaching to the top shelf of the fridge!

In what ways has Empower supported your growth personally & professionally?

Empower have been so accommodating in supporting my work-life balance, which can be difficult to find in some workplaces. This has been highlighted recently by allowing me to juggle of seeing clients while managing recent home-schooling duties that accompanied the COVID-19 outbreak.

Empower host regular PD events, help foster team cohesion, in addition to having a supportive management team. All these factors are vital in providing the scaffolding for professional growth. When I started at Empower I had several staff members share hints and tips to make my transition into the workplace easier. Coming from a busy private clinic, this support was most welcome.

In your new role, what will you be looking to achieve in 2020?

In any job, it is important to set personal goals and always work towards something to keep things interesting. I have several goals that I am working towards this year. After working in private practice for so long, my clientele with neurological disorders were rare. As there is a variety of conditions across all aspects of physiotherapy in aged care, my aim is to brush up on a range of specific neuro-physiotherapy treatment techniques.

The joy of physiotherapy comes with helping a client achieve their goals. My main focus for the year is to make as many of their goals a reality. Due to Empower having a multi-disciplinary team at your fingertips, in addition to working closely with case managers, I am looking forward to utilising these services to really make as much of a positive impact for my clients.

What piece of advice would you give your new graduate self?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions of more experienced physios. Clinical experience is where most of your learning will come from, which as a new graduate is obviously in short supply. Building rapport with your team leader to discuss clients and conditions is the most effective way to put all the pieces together.

Out of the workplace, what are your interests and hobbies?

Other than spending quality time with my wife and 2 kids, my other passions involve a lot of sports. I still play basketball, enjoy the football (mad Eagles supporter) and enjoy taking my kayak out in the bay over the summer. I have a fiddle around with my guitar, which normally involves a feeble attempt to play along with the Foo Fighters. I also love podcasts and go through countless episodes from my favourite hosts when travelling between appointments.
